Chips, the most eaten condiment while enjoying a lovely afternoon or enjoying your favorite sport is almost a must. The consumption of chips is a go-to as due to its flavor, crispiness and easy snack that proves to go well along with almost any drink. PepsiCo India which manufactures Lays in India decides to reduce the usage of palm oil due to its harmful effects on a human body over a period of time, this has caused the company to shift and make drastic changes in it mixing composition of oil for the production chips under Lays.

PepsiCo India is shifting in a significant transformation by changing its ways to reduce the usage of palm oil in Lays which contributes to higher risk of heart diseases in humans. The massive food company is currently running a trial test on a different composition of oil for the production of Lays chips.

The chips will be made using a composition of sunflower oil and palmolein ( an edible vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of oil palm trees), instead of using their regular combination of palm oil and palmolein. As per reports from Times of India, a spokesperson for Lays mentioned that the current changes are being made as PepsiCo is a dedicated food company in producing high quality, great-tasting products in every market where we operate. There are often the usage of different materials based on the location the company is situated along with the preference of the local audience in the taste of food and drinks.

This further comes down to the ingredients availability and other resources which help in the manufacturing of food products and drinks that are of the highest quality possible for consumption by the consumers. Ever key ingredient that is used in the manufacturing of the the product is put down on its packaging which helps the consumers take the right decision on the purchase of the products, often the resulting in a higher good will among the audience for its brand and to hold a place in the market for a longer duration.

This is the sole reason of shifting of PepsiCo India towards the usage of sunflower oil. The company added that it is still in process as they have only tried the combination of sunflower oil and palmolein in few of its products under the Lays banner.

PepsiCo being a well-known multinational a food and beverage company has gained traction in popularity over the years which has enabling it grow extensively over the period of time. Lays being one of the top brands under the banner of PepsiCo due its crunchy texture and delicious flavors.

PepsiCo produces chips in USA with the combination of more healthy oil namely sunflower oil and canola oil, with the current trial of using sunflower oil instead of palm oil in India showcases a huge step of the company to improve and develop food products that are comparatively lower is saturated fatty oils. It also makes Lays India to be one of the first companies of India to take a step in the right direction by keeping in mind the health of its consumers allowing it to gain a more significant good will and faith towards its food products among the Indian population.

In an article of Harvard Medical School by Celeste Robb-Nicholson ( an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School), MD, mentioned “Palm oil is one of the most widely produced edible fats in the world .” She further added ” Palm oil, palm kernel oil, and coconut oil – the so called tropical oils – got a bad reputation because they’re high in saturated fats, which has long been linked to heart diseases. Saturated fat boosts “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, both of which are risk factors for heart disease. Palm oil, which is 50% saturated, has a more favorable fatty acid composition than palm kernel oil and coconut oil, which are more than 85% saturated .

Lays Under the banner PepsiCo has been growing well over the years in the Indian market with Potato chips market in India registered a positive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.37% during the period 2016 to 2021 with the sales value of INR 165,156.48 Million in 2021, an increase of 21.34% over 2020. The market achieved its strongest performance in 2019, when it grew by 21.77% over its previous year and its weakest performance in 2020, when it increased by 0.58% over 2019. With this statistics it is enough to say the potato chips market will keep growing over the years in the Indian market

Lays is also a key competitor that focuses both on brand image and innovation. This sub brand has been developed for the Indian market.
