On Wednesday, the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed the theme of its spring 2024 exhibit, which will be launched by the massive party known as the Met Gala. The celebrity hosts of the May 6 event have yet to be announced.

The “sleeping beauties” referred to in the show’s title are actually treasured garments in the museum’s collection that are so fragile that they require special glass “coffins,” according to curators. Garments will be displayed in a series of galleries organized around natural themes.

“Using the natural world as a uniting visual metaphor for the transience of fashion, the show will explore cyclical themes of rebirth and renewal, breathing new life into these storied objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the scents, sounds, textures, and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body,” according to a press release from the museum.

2023, Last year’s theme was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and gala attendees dressed to honor the late designer who worked with brands such as Chanel and Fendi; however, the theme was controversial because Lagerfeld reportedly spoke out against gay men adopting children, sexual assault survivors, and the #MeToo movement when he was alive and well.

2022, “Gilded Glamour” was a theme that challenged celebrity attendees to honor fashion’s role in American history, which led to many wearing vintage designs — including Kim Kardashian, who stunned the red carpet in the dress that Marilyn Monroe wore while singing “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

2021, This particular year’s theme — “American Independence” — was meant to honor American fashion, and many did so by donning red, white, and blue looks; the accompanying exhibit was about 70% young American designers, according to Vanity Fair, and the guest list was heavy on Gen Z attendees.
